This month marks the beginning of the Dark Angel novels, so we're truly going back to the beginning...and then some. We've always wanted to tell new stories, to reveal the untold secrets of that world and its characters. So we made DARK ANGEL: BEFORE THE DAWN the official prequel to the television series, in which we'll reveal how Dark Angel became a thief, how she came to Seattle, and how she met so many of the people who became central to her life: Original Cindy, Normal, Sketchy, even Logan...sort of. This is perfect for new readers, since they won't have to know anything about the series in order to enjoy this book to its fullest.
From the very first episode, we were fascinated by the world of Dark Angel--a world in which a terrorist attack had plunged the United States into chaos, and infused our society with a third-world layer of poverty and corruption. And there was the military side, as the top-secret, pseudo-military facility known as Manticore unleashed the transgenic super soldiers--some of them beautiful, like Max, others frighteningly grotesque. The television series had a dark, gritty, sexy attitude, and the fact that the series ended so abruptly gave us our golden opportunity.
It became an opportunity in that it made these novels the home for Dark Angel. By working closely with 20th Century Fox and Lightstorm--James Cameron's outfit--we've been able to expand upon the world they created, and all of it has become canon! In DARK ANGEL: SKIN GAME (February), we're going to continue where the series left off, and show how the transgenics deal with being trapped in a ghetto of toxic waste surrounded by the army and facing a serial killer who might be one of their own--a transgenic.
In DARK ANGEL: THE EYES ONLY DOSSIER, we're doing more than just a guide to the world of Dark Angel. The dossier will be written as if by Logan--the cyber-journalist known as Eyes Only. We'll show the official documentation of four of his most important, unsolved investigations, and in doing so we'll reveal things about the government, about the pulse, and about the society of the near future. And there will be lots of excellent, nasty corruption.
We've been incredibly lucky with our authors. The novels are being written by Max Allan Collins, who's famous for the original graphic novel ROAD TO PERDITION, as well as the gritty Nate Heller novels, and bestsellers like SAVING PRIVATE RYAN and THE MUMMY. And for the Eyes Only book, we turned to D.A. Stern, who took exactly this sort of realistic approach with the Blair Witch Project books, including the BLAIR WITCH DOSSIER. No one could have done it better.
So even though the television series has ended, the adventure lives on, and we couldn't be happier with the results. They definitely kick ass!
